01
Season Dates
Ruffed Grouse: September 12 – January 3 American Woodcock: September 19 – November 2 Early-season grouse hunting can mean heavy foliage, but hunting gets easier as the leaves begin to drop and visibility improves. Woodcock season overlaps the early grouse season, offering another great opportunity to get out in the Northwoods. Season dates are subject to Wisconsin DNR regulations. Hunters are responsible for proper licenses and permits.
02
What to Bring
Brush pants or chaps, broken-in waterproof boots, blaze orange hat and vest, shooting glasses, ear protection, two liters of water, and a light rain shell. Leave the heavy pack in the truck.
03
License Information
A Wisconsin small game license is required; woodcock hunters also need free HIP registration. Purchase online through the DNR's Go Wild portal — bring your printed or digital copy to the meeting point.
04
Firearm Recommendations
A 20 or 28 gauge with improved cylinder chokes is ideal in thick cover. Shells of 7.5 or 8 shot, one ounce or less. Bring 2–3 boxes for a full day.
05
Dog Policy
Hunters are encouraged to bring their own dog, but we do have one finished dog available for an additional $35/day, paid at the time of the hunt.
06
Weather
October in Price County averages 30–55°F with frequent morning frost. Dress in wool and synthetic layers you can shed by mid-morning. Cotton stays wet all day.

Meet the Dog
A 4-Year-Old English Setter with a Nose for Grouse
She's excellent at what matters most in the Northwoods—finding birds and putting them on point. At four years old, she's a seasoned grouse dog with a strong nose and plenty of experience in the woods.
She hasn't quite mastered the art of retrieving yet, but she'll find the birds and give you plenty of opportunities to put them in the bag.
Meet the Dog
Jager — A 3-Month-Old Munsterlander Pup with Big Shoes to Fill
Jager came to us from Feather Cloud Kennels, a Munsterlander breeder in Fremont, Wisconsin. His sire is a show dog living in Scotland, and his dam is a bird-training dog still working at the breeder's kennel—so the instincts run deep on both sides.
At just three months old, his own training is already underway this fall. He's got a long way to go before he's matching the setter in the field, but the nose is there and the desire is growing every day. Keep an eye out for him on your hunt.
